Uncertainty and flexibility lie at the heart of this project’s design concept. The sensational, spatial qualities of the interiors, as well as the formal configuration of its exterior, directly respond to the displacement of turning boxes that lead the building’s volume to become open or closed, introverted or extroverted.
The heavy south west wind flowing from the bay of Bengal and round the year scorchy sun are two major considerations for the design. The use of “mathal” a traditional hat that farmers in this region wear during harvesting to help protect them from rain and sun helped to understand the design philosophy of this project.
Our experience of designing and our involvement with the building of the Chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour at Mashem- Canacona, Goa, having recently won the 4th All India Stone Architectural Award for excellence and creativity in the use of natural stone, was the most enriching and special one.
